Freedom & Justice: How Sweet the Sound takes its title from How Sweet the Sound: A Soundtrack for America, Charly Palmer's most recent children's book illustration project with author Kwame Brown, while placing that work within the larger continuum of Palmer's career as both a fine artist and an acclaimed illustrator. In addition to the featured illustrations from other books Palmer has brought to life, the selected works on paper and canvas reflect the recurring themes, visual language, and cultural concerns that have shaped his artistic practice.
Across these works, Palmer explores freedom, justice, history, identity, memory, music, and Black cultural expression. His illustrations and fine art are connected by the same commitment to storytelling and to portraying Black life with complexity, dignity, beauty, and emotional depth. By bringing works created for the printed page into conversation with paintings and works on paper, the exhibition demonstrates that Palmer does not treat illustration and fine art as separate creative worlds. Instead, both become vehicles for preserving history, expressing lived experience, and inviting audiences into deeper reflection.
These illustrations and fine art pieces further reveal the breadth of Palmer's contribution to children's literature and visual storytelling. His images introduce young readers to history, culture, extraordinary lives, and complex ideas through a visual language that is immediate and accessible without sacrificing depth. Illustration, in Palmer's hands, becomes more than accompaniment to a written narrative; it becomes an essential part of how a story is understood, remembered, and felt. That relationship between art, literature, and education is central to Freedom & Justice. As Palmer's visit extends beyond Hearne Fine Art and into Little Rock School District classrooms, the exhibition underscores the importance of artists and books in shaping how younger generations encounter history and understand their own capacity to participate in its continuing story.
Presented by Hearne Fine Art and Pyramid Art, Books & Custom Framing in partnership with the Central Arkansas Library System Six Bridges Book Festival and the Clinton Presidential Center, Freedom & Justice: How Sweet the Sound celebrates the full range of Charly Palmer's practice-from the intimacy of the illustrated page to the scale and presence of the canvas. Together, these works invite viewers of all ages to consider how images carry stories across generations, how art can illuminate both the past and present, and how the continuing pursuit of freedom and justice can be seen, remembered, imagined-and heard.
