This body of work is an exploration of the time we are living in—a moment charged with complexity, urgency, and reflection. My process began with the creation of clocks, devices that not only measure time literally but also serve as metaphors for the cultural and social rhythms reflected in today’s headlines.
The question “What Time Is It?” resonates deeply within African American vernacular and history. During moments of struggle, protest, and upheaval, this question has been a powerful rallying cry—an invocation to awaken, to unite, and to act.
Through the depiction of iconic figures from African American history, I seek to awaken cultural awareness and inspire a renewed sense of pride, power, and purpose within the heritage that shapes us. The colors I use evoke spiritual nostalgia, while the titles serve as clarion calls, inviting viewers to reflect on time as a continuum—past, present, and future—and as an active process of change and growth.
In a world fraught with political, social, religious, and economic turmoil, many are unsure how to respond. As James Baldwin famously said, “Artists must disturb the peace.” It is my hope that this exhibition will leave you feeling enriched, energized, and empowered to ask yourself—What Time Is It? - Rex DeLoney
