Hearne Fine Art is proud to present The Messengers: A Survey of Work in Metalpoint Drawings by Marjorie Williams-Smith. Although Williams-Smith’s striking floral portraiture has been a standout in multiple group shows at (and organized by) HFA since for 18 years, the time has come to recognize this astounding artist with a solo exhibition that doubles as a survey of growth and perseverance. As we commemorate our 30th year showcasing theforemost collection of African-American art, HFA staff dared not think of any other artist that has pushed the limits of a medium as much as Williams-Smith. From exclusively working in silverpoint to demonstrating a mastery of additional metals, the progression of this artist’s technique and understanding of depth and volume has translated to the production of the most beautiful renderings of flora.
This show’s title The Messengers implies each piece has a story to convey. Metalpoint requires the special preparation of paper so that the selected metal of the drawing tool interacts and reacts to the surface’s chemicals to create image. With every line drawn, Williams-Smith is the ultimate messenger, imparting years of training, discipline and patience into each composition. We invite you to spend time with each piece, “listening” for theartist’s interpretation of place and time.
