Inspired by lyrics from the song Lady by late Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti, this and the other two similarly named paintings, address what it means to be “liberated” African woman. The subjects in each of the paintings embody the “modern” African woman. They are bold, confident, stylish and unapologetic about their femininity and sexuality. All of which is great, but the idea of the “modern” African woman appears to only apply to those who have the monetary means and education to overcome their circumstances. The collage pieces which compose the clothing of each of the subjects in the Lady mini-series, give the viewer a glimpse of the lives of real African women and the challenges they face daily.
