| Charles Criner Printmaking |
b. 1945 Athens, Texas
“My subject matter is simple and direct. I am not a great believer in abstract art and my print making is limited to my own personal experiences, to drawings of familiar places and things around me. Most of my art reflects the colorful history of black people, and my favorite pastime, fishing. Until I enrolled at Texas Southern and started studying under Dr. John Biggers, I had never drawn a black person. Dr. Biggers etched in me a sense of pride in reproducing our images and I have done so ever since. In my art, I don’t want the viewer to be distracted by abstract images. Like a good piece of music, I want my art to say things clearly. I don’t want the viewer to have to decide what he is looking at. I want the image to be direct so that the viewer immediately understands the story behind the picture.” – CC
